About Results and Events
Salle Mauro fencers
compete in a variety of local and even more challenging national
and international tournaments. Here you will find a partial list
of our fencer's results, pictures and general information regarding
these tournaments.
There are several
tiers of competition. Fencers usually begin with club and local
Houston tournaments, refining their skills and developing a competitive
edge until the move on to sectional and other local tournaments
in Texas. Here fencers usually earn a classification. A classification
is a letter from A to E (with A being the highest) that is earned
in competition. The classification reflects the skill level of a
fencer. A classification includes the letter assigned as well as
the year in which it was last earned, for example "A02",
which would be an A earned in 2002. Classifications are valid for
four years, at which point they revert to the next lowest letter,
or unclassified, "U", if the classification has not been
re-earned within the four-year period. Fencers earn their classifications
by fencing at tournaments, the more difficult the tournament, the
higher the rating earned for winning. Receiving a classification
helps the fencer entering successive tournaments by "seeding"
them higher in pools. For more information on seeding and tournaments
visit the United States Fencing Association
web site or contact Salle Mauro.
Depending on
the fencers age, there are a variety of national tournaments to
compete in for points. Points are awarded throughout the year to
fencers at designated events. These points determine who becomes
a member on various national teams (such as the Pan American Team)
and who is awarded National Champion in their age group. Age groups
vary widely from Y10 (fencers under the age of 10) to Veterans events
for more seasoned fencers.
The highest
level of competition are World Cup level, culminating in the World
Championship or the Olympics.
